Look for high waves in the ocean forecast. - [March in Joshua Tree National Park](https://www.mnvphotography.com/march-in-joshua-tree-national-park/): In March 2024, we headed to Joshua Tree National Park with our 9-year-old grandson along for the trip. He loves to hike and camp, and he was out of school for spring break. We arrived at Black Rock Campground right at dusk. Joshua Tree National Monument was put in place in 1936, later on as part of the Desert Protection Bill, Joshua Tree National Monument was elevated to National Park status on October 31, 1994 - [Bundutec Truck Camper](https://www.mnvphotography.com/new-bundutec-camper/): I started my search for a camper about 3 years ago. Vicki and I both retire in 2025, and we wanted something for camping off the beaten path. We plan on boondocking most of the time because I want to be able to walk out the door and start shooting images. What led me to Bundutec USA was that they were using more advanced technologies than many of the pop-up truck camper manufacturers at the time, including the bundutec truck camper. From the Truma Combi heater & water heater combo to USB charging ports throughout the inside and some on the outside. We used to own a 9.5 ft slide-in camper, but I wanted one with a lower COG, solar power, a more efficient heater, an efficient 12-volt refrigerator, and lighter overall weight. - [Sawtooth Mountains, Near Stanley, Idaho](https://www.mnvphotography.com/sawtooth-mountains-near-stanley-idaho/): Reflection of the Sawtooth Mountains in a small pond, near Highway 21. - [Exploring Bowl of Fire – Nevada](https://www.mnvphotography.com/bowl-of-fire-nevada/): We spent the night in Las Vegas, doing the tourist thing and taking our grandson Gauge to the Tournament of Kings show at the Excalibur. Today was supposed to be the warmest day of our trip (70f) so Vicki and Gauge stayed at the hotel to swim, after sleeping in. Bowl of Fire is located in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, off the Northshore Road, just south of the Muddy Mountains Wilderness area. - [Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada](https://www.mnvphotography.com/valley-of-fire-state-park/): We left Buffington Pockets in time to get to Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, at sunrise. The road into Buffington Pockets follows a dry wash, and was very rough. Driving back out was a crawl, and made it hard to drink my coffee, without wearing it. Once down on the flat, the road smoothed out, and we were able to make better time. Before we lost cell service, we stopped to check the weather report. The next afternoon looked windy and wet, so we needed to get in our exploring before then. - [Gold Butte National Monument to Buffington Pockets](https://www.mnvphotography.com/gold-butte-national-monument-to-buffington-pockets/): We left Gold Butte National Monument and drove to Mesquite, Nevada to pick up some ice. One hinge on the cooler had broken, but there were no hinges at Wally World. The sporting goods clerk didn't think it was funny when I asked to borrow a phillips head screwdriver, because I could see hinges that would work. - [Gold Butte National Monument – Petroglyphs](https://www.mnvphotography.com/gold-butte-national-monument-petroglyph-area/): It was late March 2023 in the Mojave Desert, we explored Little Finland, the day before and this morning. After that, we drove to the Seven Keyholes Canyon for a short hike. After hiking the canyon, and looking for petroglyphs, we had lunch and made our way to the petroglyph area west of Whitney Pockets. - [Gold Butte National Monument – Explore Little Finland](https://www.mnvphotography.com/gold-butte-national-monument-little-finland/): My wife was on spring break, take me somewhere warm, she said, and my grandson wanted to go camping. I love exploring the back country, so I picked out Gold Butte National Monument, in Nevada, as our first stop. We left Eugene, at around 2:00 pm, driving over two mountain passes with packed snow. After a few of stops for fuel, to play in the snow, and grab a bite to eat, we made it to Fallon, Nevada after 8 1/2 hours on the road. - [Photography Road Trip to Eastern Oregon](https://www.mnvphotography.com/road-trip-to-eastern-oregon/): Late August 2020, before the big wildfires of September 2020, we took a road trip to Eastern Oregon. It was time to get away and socially distance ourselves in some remote areas, and capture some beautiful images. - [Northern California Redwoods State Parks](https://www.mnvphotography.com/northern-california-redwoods-state-parks/): In late September, we  took a photo trip to the Southern Oregon Coast. To fill in the time between sunrise and sunsets, we explored some trails in Jedediah Smith, Del Norte Coast and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Parks. I am planning a trip back in late May, when the rhododendrons are blooming. While it rained on us several times, we did see the sun come out for a few hikes. We had rain gear for us and the cameras when it was raining. - [Southern Oregon Coast Photo Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/southern-oregon-coast/): I made this trip in September with other members from the Emerald Photographic Society. September seems like a long time ago, but I was busy with other things. Here is my story about a trip to the Southern Oregon Coast visiting Shore Acres, Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor, and Bandon. We left after sunrise, from Eugene, because the weather forecast was for cloudy skies. We stopped at Shore Acres State Park on the way to Harris Beach State Park. - [Photographs: Salt Point State Park To Bandon, OR](https://www.mnvphotography.com/salt-point-state-park-trinidad-ca-bandon-or/): The night before was gorgeous, I captured a lot of good images. The next morning started early, even for March. It was the raccoon's fault, they got into our cooler, stole some food and tipped it over. We camped at Salt Creek State Park, and the food boxes were too small (and broken) to store the cooler. I figured that critters must not be a problem, I was wrong, which I found out from a rude awakening at 1:00am. Getting back into the pickup I stepped on the remote, the alarm was going off, and I had to dig through my pants to find it. Good thing we left camp before sunrise, to photograph the sunrise, I am sure our neighbors were not happy. - [Photographs from the Sonoma Coast](https://www.mnvphotography.com/photos-from-the-sonoma-coast/): After we left Point Arena, we drove further south on Highway 1, down to a campground in Sonoma County, California. We got there, found a campsite, and headed to the ocean shore with the sky looking promising. On a photography road trip you are at the mercy of mother nature. Capturing the light is what photography is all about. Tonight and tomorrow morning made the trip, the light was gorgeous. - [Scenic Highway 1: Westport to Point Arena Photographs](https://www.mnvphotography.com/highway-1-westport-to-point-arena/): Day 4 of our Road Trip started off wet, gray and cloudy, it rained hard all night. We left Burlington Campground in Humboldt Redwoods State Park and headed for Westport on the California coast. Highway 1 from Leggett to Westport reminds me of the old McKenzie Highway here in Oregon. It has enough curves for a road that is much longer, one hour to travel 28 miles (ca. 45 km) was curvy enough. - [Klamath Cove to Humboldt Redwoods State Park](https://www.mnvphotography.com/klamath-cove-to-redwoods-state-park/): Day 2 of our Photography trip over Spring Break. We spent the night at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and got up early for the promise of a colorful sky at sunrise at Klamath Cove. Clouds had moved in overnight more than what was forecast, so I settled for what Mother Nature gave me. - [Bandon Beach to Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor](https://www.mnvphotography.com/bandon-beach-to-brookings/): We left Sunset Bay in the morning and headed south, we were eventually headed to the Redwoods, but made some stops along the way. I wanted to scout out some photography spots on the way south, so we planned to stop along the way.We drove the winding Seven Devils Road towards Bandon. The morning was gray and drizzly, but started clearing up as we got closer to Bandon. - [Cape Arago, Oregon Photography Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/cape-arago-oregon-photography-trip/): These Cape Arago Photographs will surely inspire your next adventure. - [Northern Oregon Coast Photos](https://www.mnvphotography.com/north-oregon-coast-photos/): Blog Report and Photos from the North Oregon Coast: In early July 2018 Vicki and I made a trip to the coast. We drove to Pacific City and then worked our way north over the border to Long Beach, Washington. Stopping along the way to shoot a few photographs and scouting for the sunset and sunrise to come. We had clear and sunny weather the first day. - [Palouse Photography Road Trip Day 3](https://www.mnvphotography.com/palouse-photography-road-trip-day-3/): Day 3, shooting images of the Palouse photography road trip day 3, started early with a trip to the top of Steptoe Butte for sunrise. Dave Horton and I had a route planned out with a stop later at Palouse River Falls for the sunset and the full moon rising. - [Palouse Photography Road Trip Day 2](https://www.mnvphotography.com/palouse-photography-road-trip-day-2/): Day 2 of our trip to the Palouse started off gray and cloudy. We left Colfax before sunrise and drove to Steptoe Butte, but instead of a sunrise it was more of a slow gray increase in light. No images, from Steptoe this morning, were keepers, so we made our way off the butte and began to explore. - [Palouse Area Road Trip Day 1](https://www.mnvphotography.com/palouse-area-road-trip-day-1/): In late May we hit the road and headed for the Palouse area. The rolling wheat fields were green and the weather good. Time for some exploration. Dave Horton and I left The Dalles, Oregon and Dufur area, where we spent the night, as we headed toward the Palouse in Eastern Washington. - [Abandoned near Dufur to Maryhill](https://www.mnvphotography.com/abandoned-dufur-to-maryhill/): In late May, Dave Horton and I were headed from Eugene to the Palouse area in Washington, but made an afternoon stop at Dufur, Oregon. We were looking for abandoned buildings near Dufur and found several. We also planned on taking some morning images near Maryhill, Washington. Knowing we were going to be out past dinner time, we picked some fried chicken in The Dalles, Oregon. - [Hoh Rain Forest – Second Beach Photography Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/hoh-rain-forest-second-beach/): On day 6 of our trip to Olympic National Park we traveled to the Hoh Rain Forest and then to Second Beach as part of our hoh rain forest second Beach photography trip. We spent the night in La Push, Washington. The stars were out when we went to bed, but the forecast was for cloudy skies in the morning. - [Hobuck Beach – Rialto Beach, Washington](https://www.mnvphotography.com/hobuck-beach-rialto-beach/): Day 5 of our late March trip to Olympic National Park, in Washington, started off with overcast skies. Today the plan was to leave Hobuck Beach Resort, and head back toward Forks ending up at Rialto Beach for sunset. - [Sol Duc – Lake Crescent – Neah Bay Photography Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/sol-duc-lake-crescent-neah-bay/): The plan for today is to head to Sol Duc Falls and Lake Crescent. It rained hard again all night, making it hard to sleep with the rain pounding on the canopy. The canopy also developed a leak around the window seal, which was fixed when we got back home. We were camped at Three Rivers RV Park, NE of Forks, Washington. - [Queets Rain Forest – Beach 4 | Olympic National Park](https://www.mnvphotography.com/queets-rain-forest-beach-4-olympic-national-park/): Our plan today was to go to the Queets Rain Forest, but since it was raining, it was a perfect day for the rain forest. The Queets Valley Road is washed out, so we drove down Highway 101 to Forest Service Rd 21. Signage for the turns to get to the Upper Queets Road was good, and about 12 miles later we were at the Queets River Campground.  Arriving at the campground we found 3 sites occupied and two people just leaving. It took a little scouting, but we found the trail head to Sam's River Trail east of the campground. - [Ruby Beach – Olympic National Park](https://www.mnvphotography.com/ruby-beach-olympic-national-park/): Kalaloch and Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington were on tap for day two of our late March trip to Olympic National Park. Exploring, photographing, walking the trails and beaches and camping out at night. We drove from Graves Creek Campground through Queets to Beach 1. It started out a nice sunny day, not so good for waterfall images, but I was hoping for some good color in the sky for sunset. - [Photography Adventure in Lake Quinault, Olympic National Park](https://www.mnvphotography.com/lake-quinault-olympic-national-park/): We left Eugene, Oregon Saturday morning on a trip to Olympic National Park, Washington and the surrounding area. Lake Quinault area was our first stop off Highway 101. After visiting the Lake Quinault Lodge, we headed up the South Shore Road. - [Waldo Lake Photo Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/waldo-lake-photo-trip/): I had planned on going to Waldo Lake, Oregon for a photo trip this morning for sunrise, but the cloud cover forecast changed and I didn't think I would get a colorful sunrise. I figured I wouldn't go, but then I got an Aurora alert. - [Alabama Hills to Mono Lake](https://www.mnvphotography.com/alabama-hills-mono-lake/): After leaving Lee Flat at around 4:15 in the morning we drove to the town of Lone Pine and grabbed a mug of coffee. Just a few more miles to the Alabama Hills along the Eastern Sierra Mountains and the sky was showing a faint glow to the east. - [Lee Flat Death Valley National Park](https://www.mnvphotography.com/lee-flat-death-valley/): After leaving the Racetrack, in Death Valley National Park, we traveled to Lee Flat on the western edge of the park. - [The Racetrack Playa Photography Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/the-racetrack-playa/): Our adventure began with the racetrack playa photography trip, where we aimed to capture the unique landscapes. - [Mesquite Dunes – Stovepipe Wells Photography Trip](https://www.mnvphotography.com/mesquite-dunes-stovepipe-wells/): Day four in Death Valley we left early from Emigrant Campground and headed to the Mesquite dunes before sunrise. Strong winds last night erased hundreds of footprints for fairly untrammeled sand. The sand dunes here are located between the mountains, so the wind just blows the sand in a big eddy and recreates the dunes after every windstorm. - [Visit to Death Valley](https://www.mnvphotography.com/visit-to-death-valley/): Day Three in Death Valley, after camping up the road to Echo Canyon, began by  getting up early to catch the sunrise at Zabriskie Point. We arrived and staked out a spot before most people showed up. I knew it was a popular place to photograph, but didn't realize I would be sharing it with so many people. ## Pages - [Wildlife and Birds](https://www.mnvphotography.com/wildlife-and-birds/): If you are interested in purchasing any of the fine art images on this page, please contact me with the print style, size, and image name. - [Southwest United States](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/southwest-united-states/): If you are interested in purchasing any of the fine art images on this page, please contact me with the print style, size, and image name. - [Alaska Images](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/alaska/): If you are interested in purchasing any of the fine art images on this page, please contact me with the print style, size, and image name. - [Newsletters](https://www.mnvphotography.com/newsletters/): Sign up to stay updated on our latest news and insights. I use one of the best high quality display monitors (BenQ) and regularly review my computer display's calibration. I color manage using a monitor calibration tool so that the images I send to my professional lab or print myself are the way I have intended the image to be. However, your monitor display may show the color a little differently, if it is not calibrated correctly. - [2027 Calendars – Images from the North and West](https://www.mnvphotography.com/2027-landscape-calendar-images-from-north-and-west/): My 2027 calendars are now available, featuring images from Oregon, Arizona, Utah, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Alaska. When the primary subject isn't related to landscapes or nature, I found it challenging to determine the appropriate classification for the image. Within this gallery, you'll find cityscapes, lighthouses, stadiums, bridges, parks, and fascinating man made and city images. - [Small Scenes & Abstract Photographs](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/small-scenes-abstract/): A small scene photograph captures a specific, intimate detail, texture, or localized pattern within a broader setting—like a desert playa, a rock face, solitary flowers, or a section of flowing water—while excluding the horizon or sky. This category also encompasses abstract images such as reflections in rivers, intentional camera movement (ICM), camera painting, and smaller scenes found in the surrounding landscape. - [Rivers and Streams Nature Photography](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/river-stream-images/): The Coast Range Mountains receive annual precipitation of up to 200 inches, resulting in a plentiful supply of rivers and streams. In the Cascades, certain rivers and streams derive their water from melting snow and springs, while others depend on rainfall. This combination of rainfall and snow melt contributes to Oregon's lush greenery throughout the year. Notably, the Willamette River drains a watershed larger than the entire state of Maryland. Additionally, the streams and rivers in the Olympic rainforests are nourished by significant rainfall and melting snow. - [Road Trip Adventures](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/road-trip-images/): Sometimes you just have to hit the road and explore new places. Join me for a look at some amazing places, I've traveled to. While some of these majestic and scenic locations may not be new to you, there are many others waiting to be explored. Since I have been spending more time on the road traveling, this gallery is getting split up into other galleries. - [Central and Eastern Oregon Image Gallery](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/central-and-eastern-oregon-images/): Central and Eastern Oregon Image Gallery featuring fine art nature and landscape photos from Central and Eastern Oregon. From the High Desert to the Great Basin, there are a lot of natural wonders in Central and Eastern Oregon. One of those places is the Painted Hills, with colors made from natural minerals and deposits. The Great Basin is a land covered with sagebrush and juniper, that receives only about 5 inches of rain in some spots yearly. - [Print Styles and Pricing](https://www.mnvphotography.com/pricing/): I offer high-quality fine art landscape and nature prints for your home or office. As I stand looking up at the night sky, watching the Milky Way march across the sky or the Aurora dancing I am filled with a sense of wonder. The silence of the night intensifies the wonder, realizing of course, that we are the ones on this rotating planet we call Earth. . Night after night, the constellations reveal their secrets, offering a glimpse into the mysteries of existence. Capturing these moments through photography allows me to share the beauty of the cosmos with others. Each image serves as a reminder of our place in the universe and the magic that surrounds us. - [Image Galleries](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/): Alaska Images - [Waterfall Images](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/waterfall-images/): Waterfalls are wonderful because they combine breathtaking raw power, a mental reset, and vibrant natural beauty into a single living landscape. The rhythmic, white-noise roar of falling water calms, washes away internal noise, and masks distracting background noise. No two visits to a waterfall are identical because shifting sunlight, changing water levels, and seasonal freezing reshape the scene constantly. Capturing the essence of nature, these stunning waterfall images showcase the beauty and majesty of cascading water. - [Columbia River Gorge](https://www.mnvphotography.com/galleries/columbia-river-gorge-images/): The Columbia River Gorge was cut by the Missoula Floods, 1000s of years ago. The floods cut a stunning gorge through the Cascade Mountains, leaving hundreds of waterfalls, scenic overlooks and hiking trails in its wake. The Gorge is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon, with ample picture taking opportunities. Winters bring snow and ice, spring brings snow melt, rainfall, and new signs of life to the Gorge. Catch wild flowers blooming during the spring and early summer months. - [About](https://www.mnvphotography.com/about/): Mark Gotchall is a Eugene, Oregon based landscape and Nature Photographer.
